Zeeburgereiland sits ten minutes from Amsterdam Central, and most people in the city have never set foot on it. I live here, so this is the short version of what you are missing.
Five things the island actually gives you:
- New homes. Almost everything on the island was built in the last fifteen years, and thousands more are on the way — proper insulation, lifts, balconies and floor plans that actually fit a family. Things you will not find in a seventeenth-century canal house.
- Calm. Water on three sides and open skies. You hear birds, not bachelor parties. No tourists, and the center is still ten minutes away.
- Families. The island is built for them: playgrounds everywhere, schools including an international one, wide walkways, and possibly the highest stroller density in Amsterdam.
- Transport. Tram 26 runs straight through, and by bike it is flat and fast along the water. Space at the edge of the city, with a real commute to the center.
- Sport. Streets named after Olympic champions, a large urban sports zone with padel, football and tennis, one of the biggest skateparks in the country — and all that water for everything else.
